We believe that any Romania tours that include the charming Sibiu medieval city should include a drive through Transfagarasan road and Poenari castle - aka The Real Dracula castle.

DAY 1: Bucharest - Transfagarasan Road - Sibiu

When you will get back home from your journey in Romania, you will have an unforgettable memory after having seen the Transfagarasan road.

Jeremy Clarkson – the famous co-presenter of UK tv car show Top Gear and for some time now presenting a new car show Amazon Prime – words for Transfagarasan were “best road in the world”, “thank you Romania for having us” and “can we stay…forever?” just to name a few.

Your tour begins in the morning leaving from Bucharest and within 2 ½ hours we will arrive at Vidraru Lake and Dam, the 5th tallest dam in Europe and 9th in the World with a height of 166 meters. Good enough even for the bungee jumping fans.
Now the excitement starts!!! We will probably not drive you in one of Top Gear’s cars to feel the same adrenaline those guys had while making the show on the Transfagarasan road, but the sinuous road with endless U turns, deep ravines with breathtaking views, spectacular waterfalls and glacial lakes, and steep rocks will give you the feeling they're going to crumble over you.
We shall drive up to 2034m altitude, where we will find Balea glacial lake and waterfall after going through the longest auto tunnel in Romania, 887 meters long. The Transfagarasan road was built in the early 1970’s at a large human and financial costs, first as strategic military road and then opened for tourists.

In the late afternoon or evening we will arrive in Sibiu, the 2007’s European Capital of Culture. With deep ties to Saxons dating back 800 years, Sibiu is the heart of Germanic Transylvania. We will have a leisurely walk in the Large Square and Small Square, then Liars’ Bridge. For a spectacular panorama of the city and the surrounding mountains, we can go to Council Tower or the Lutheran Church.

OVERNIGHT in SIBIU
DAY 2: Sibiu - Cozia Monastery – Bucharest
Being very close to Sibiu, it is worth visiting Astra Ethnographic museum, where we can discover the “shelter for keeping the past” including over 300 old peasants households. Heading back to Bucharest, we will stop by Cozia Monastery, founded 1387, being the only Byzantine style building preserved in Romania.

Please note this trip can only take place between July and October, the rest of the year being closed due to bad weather.
